Comic Relief
There are still many communities in the UK that suffer from economic and social deprivation and the current economic climate may make this situation worse. This programme aims to empower local people enabling them to create lasting change in their communities. Projects should be run by people directly affected by the issues they are dealing with and priority will be given to small, locally based groups or organisations in areas of disadvantage that have a clear understanding of the needs of their community. This can also include “Communities of Interest” which cover a wider geographical area.

ENTRUST Small Grants Scheme Announced
ENTRUST, the regulator of the Landfill Communities Fund, has announced that its proposed Small Grants Scheme (SGS) is now open. The aim of the scheme is to allow accredited Environmental Bodies (EBs) to distribute small grants for a wide range of community activity more easily.
The following restrictions apply:
· Each individual grant will be capped at £2,000. This is the maximum total cost of the venture.
· The SGS can only be used for small, discrete schemes.
· Each EB can only allocate a maximum of £50,000 per accounting year (1 April to 31 March) to the SGS.
Currently, the SGS is in a trial period with accredited EBs and relates to Object D (providing, maintaining or improving public amenities) only. The process will be reviewed in early 2010/2011.
Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) seeks more bids from Harrow
Sue Bowers, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund London Region gave a very illuminating presentation on Heritage Lottery Fund grants at the last meeting of the External Funding Group. This revealed the wider scope of HLF than most people who attended were aware. There have been very few bids from Harrow organisations and HLF is keen to work with us to improve this position. They will be focusing on Harrow as a priority Borough from April 2010.
I am happy to work with colleagues to co-ordinate this and intend to invite interested people to a meeting to discuss our heritage funding priorities and which bids we might consider submitting to avoid duplication. Please let me know if you are interested in getting involved with this

Reaching Communities
Just a reminder to organisations thinking of applying to Reaching Communities that you don’t always have to bid for large projects. Smaller ones from £50,000 are more likely to have a higher chance of success.
The £50,000 limit for capital refurbishment programmes is also worth a shot since my information is that this element of Reaching Communities is relatively less oversubscribed.
Sport England Small Grants Programme Sport England supports the development of grassroots sporting opportunities in England. Its Small Grants programme offers from £300 to £10,000 to help local communities increase access to sport or to improve the experience of people playing sport. Voluntary and community organisations, schools, local and statutory authorities can apply. 7 out of 10 applications are currently successful in winning grants.
